Zero Trust Security: What It Means and How to Get Started

Zero Trust Security: What It Means and How to Get Started

The traditional security model — a hardened perimeter with trusted users inside — no longer works. Cloud services, remote work, mobile devices, and third-party integrations have dissolved the perimeter. Zero trust operates on a fundamentally different principle: never trust, always verify.

What Is Zero Trust?

Zero trust is a security framework that requires every user, device, and application to be authenticated and authorised before accessing any resource, regardless of whether they are inside or outside the network. There is no implicit trust based on network location. A user sitting in your office on a company laptop undergoes the same verification as someone connecting from a coffee shop.

Core Principles

Verify explicitly: Always authenticate and authorise based on all available data points — identity, device health, location, service being accessed, and the sensitivity of the data. A valid username and password is not sufficient; consider the device’s security posture, the time of access, and whether the behaviour is typical for that user.

Least privilege access: Grant only the minimum access needed for the task at hand. Use just-in-time (JIT) and just-enough-access (JEA) policies. An intern does not need the same database access as a senior developer. A marketing team member does not need access to financial systems.

Assume breach: Design your architecture as if attackers are already inside your network. Segment your network to limit blast radius. Encrypt all internal traffic, not just external-facing connections. Monitor everything. This mindset drives better architectural decisions than hoping your perimeter holds.

The Five Pillars of Zero Trust

1. Identity: Strong identity verification with MFA, risk-based authentication, and single sign-on (SSO). Every access request starts with proving who you are.

2. Devices: Only compliant, healthy devices can access resources. Check for updated OS, active antivirus, disk encryption, and proper configuration before granting access.

3. Network: Micro-segmentation divides your network into small zones. Moving from one zone to another requires re-authentication. An attacker who compromises one segment cannot freely move to others.

4. Applications: Secure application access with per-app controls. Shadow IT discovery identifies unauthorised applications. API security ensures programmatic access is properly authenticated.

5. Data: Classify data by sensitivity. Apply encryption, access controls, and data loss prevention (DLP) policies based on classification. Monitor data flows for anomalies.

Getting Started: Practical Steps

Phase 1 — Identity foundation: Implement a centralised identity provider. Enforce MFA for all users. Deploy SSO for business applications. Establish role-based access controls (RBAC). This is achievable within 1-3 months and delivers the highest security improvement per effort.

Phase 2 — Device trust: Deploy endpoint management. Establish device compliance policies. Only allow managed, compliant devices to access sensitive resources. Timeline: 3-6 months.

Phase 3 — Network segmentation: Start segmenting your network. Separate development from production, IoT from corporate, and guest from employee networks. Implement network access controls. Timeline: 6-12 months.

Phase 4 — Application and data controls: Implement per-application access policies. Deploy data classification and DLP. Enable continuous monitoring and analytics. Timeline: 12-18 months.

Zero Trust for SMEs

You do not need an enterprise budget to adopt zero trust principles. Start with identity: a cloud identity provider with MFA (Microsoft Entra ID, Google Workspace, or Okta) covers the most impactful pillar. Use cloud-native security features from your existing platforms. Focus on the principles — verify explicitly, least privilege, assume breach — rather than buying every tool in the zero trust vendor landscape.
