How to Track PPC Conversions Correctly with Google Analytics and Google Ads

Without proper conversion tracking, you are flying blind. You can see clicks and spend, but you cannot tell which keywords, ads, and campaigns actually generate business. Correct conversion tracking is the foundation of PPC profitability — it tells you what to scale, what to pause, and where to optimise.

What Counts as a Conversion

Define your conversions based on business value: Primary conversions (actions directly tied to revenue): purchase, quote request submission, phone call, demo booking. Secondary conversions (micro-conversions that indicate intent): PDF download, pricing page visit, video watch, add to cart. Track both types but optimise bidding toward primary conversions.

Google Ads Conversion Tracking

Google Ads’ native conversion tracking is the most accurate way to measure PPC performance. Setup: in Google Ads, go to Goals > Conversions > New Conversion Action. For website actions, add the Google Ads tag to your site (global site tag + event snippet on the thank-you page). For phone calls, use call tracking numbers. For app installs, connect your app analytics.

Place the conversion tag on the page a user sees AFTER completing the desired action — the thank-you page after a form submission, the order confirmation page after a purchase. Do not put it on the form page itself.

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) Setup

GA4 provides deeper insight into user behaviour beyond the conversion point. Setup: create a GA4 property, add the GA4 tag to your website (or use Google Tag Manager), and configure events. Key events to set up: page views, form submissions, button clicks, scroll depth, and any custom interactions relevant to your business.

Link GA4 to your Google Ads account: in GA4, go to Admin > Google Ads Links. This imports GA4 conversions into Google Ads and enables GA4 audiences for remarketing. It also provides conversion path data showing how PPC interacts with other channels.

Google Tag Manager

Google Tag Manager (GTM) is the recommended way to manage all your tracking tags. Instead of adding code to every page, you add the GTM container once and manage all tags through GTM’s interface. Set up tags for: Google Ads conversion tracking, GA4, Meta Pixel, LinkedIn Insight Tag, and any other tracking pixel. GTM simplifies management, reduces page load impact, and makes it easier to debug tracking issues.

Phone Call Tracking

For businesses that generate leads via phone calls, tracking calls from ads is essential. Options: Google Ads call extensions (tracks calls directly from ads), Google forwarding numbers (tracks calls from your website after an ad click), and third-party call tracking (provides individual tracking numbers per campaign/keyword). For Indian businesses, consider solutions that work with Indian phone numbers and provide call recording for quality assessment.

Attribution Models

Attribution determines which touchpoint gets credit for a conversion. Last-click: The last ad clicked gets all credit. Simple but ignores the role of earlier touchpoints. First-click: The first ad clicked gets all credit. Shows what drove initial awareness. Data-driven: Google’s AI distributes credit based on actual contribution of each touchpoint. This is the default and recommended model in Google Ads — it uses your conversion data to determine the true value of each interaction.

Common Tracking Mistakes

Double counting: Firing the conversion tag multiple times for the same action (e.g., on page refresh). Use one-per-click counting for leads. Tracking the wrong page: Putting the conversion tag on the form page instead of the confirmation page. Missing cross-device tracking: Not connecting Google Ads and GA4, missing conversions that start on mobile and finish on desktop. No conversion value: Not assigning monetary values to conversions, making ROI calculations impossible. Not testing: Assuming tracking works without verifying. Use Google Tag Assistant and real-time GA4 reports to confirm every conversion fires correctly.

Verification Checklist

After setting up tracking: 1. Submit a test conversion and verify it appears in Google Ads (may take 1-3 hours). 2. Check GA4 real-time reports for the conversion event. 3. Verify Google Tag Manager fires correctly using Preview mode. 4. Confirm attribution is working by checking the conversion path reports. 5. Set up conversion reporting columns in Google Ads for all campaign views. 6. Schedule monthly tracking audits to catch breaks early.
