Meta’s advertising platform (Facebook and Instagram) offers the most granular audience targeting of any advertising platform. With data from billions of users, you can reach people based on demographics, interests, behaviours, and their relationship with your business. Effective targeting is the difference between profitable campaigns and wasted budget.
Core Audiences: Demographic and Interest Targeting
Core audiences let you define who sees your ads based on: Location — target by country, state, city, or radius around a point. For local businesses, target your city plus a 10-25 km radius. Age and gender — narrow to your buyer demographic. Languages — target Hindi speakers or English speakers specifically. Interests — based on pages liked, content engaged with, and apps used. Behaviours — purchase behaviour, device usage, travel patterns. Demographics — education, job title, industry, relationship status, life events.
Start broad and let Meta’s algorithm narrow to your best audience. Over-targeting (too many layered restrictions) limits delivery and increases costs. A good starting audience for a B2C campaign in India is 500,000-5,000,000 people.
Custom Audiences: Retarget Your Existing Contacts
Custom Audiences target people who already have a relationship with your business. Sources include: Website visitors (via Meta Pixel) — retarget everyone who visited, or specific page visitors. Customer lists — upload email addresses or phone numbers to target existing customers. App users — target people who have used your mobile app. Engagement — people who interacted with your Facebook/Instagram content, watched your videos, or opened your lead forms.
These audiences are your warmest prospects and typically convert at 3-5x the rate of cold targeting.
Lookalike Audiences: Find More People Like Your Best Customers
Lookalike Audiences are Meta’s most powerful targeting feature. You provide a source audience (your customers, high-value website visitors, or engaged users) and Meta finds new people who share similar characteristics. The source audience should be at least 1,000 people for best results.
Lookalike percentages: 1% lookalike is the closest match (most similar to your source) — best for conversion campaigns. 2-5% expands the audience while maintaining reasonable similarity — good for awareness campaigns. Do not go above 5% unless you have massive budgets — the audience becomes too broad to be useful.
Detailed Targeting Expansion
Meta’s “Advantage Detailed Targeting” (formerly Detailed Targeting Expansion) lets the algorithm show ads beyond your defined audience when it predicts better results. For conversion campaigns with sufficient data, this often improves performance. For awareness campaigns where audience definition matters, consider disabling it to maintain targeting precision.
Audience Exclusions
Equally important as who you target is who you exclude. Exclude existing customers from acquisition campaigns (they already bought — do not waste money selling to them again, unless upselling). Exclude recent converters from retargeting campaigns. Exclude people who previously marked your ads as irrelevant. These exclusions improve relevance scores and reduce wasted spend.
Testing Targeting Strategies
Use Meta’s A/B testing feature to compare audiences. Test: interest targeting vs lookalike audiences, different lookalike sources (purchasers vs all website visitors), narrow vs broad targeting, and different geographic targeting. Run each test for 7-14 days with sufficient budget for statistical significance.
Indian Market Targeting Tips
For Indian audiences: target by language (Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, etc.) for vernacular campaigns. Target metro cities separately from Tier 2/3 cities — messaging and pricing sensitivity differ. Use life event targeting for wedding-related services (engagement celebrations are well-tracked in India). Interest targeting for cricket, Bollywood, and regional content can define broad audience segments effectively.
Audience Strategy by Funnel Stage
Top of funnel (awareness): Broad interests + lookalikes. Goal is reach and video views. Middle of funnel (consideration): Engaged audiences + website visitors. Goal is content consumption and lead generation. Bottom of funnel (conversion): Cart abandoners + pricing page visitors + email subscribers. Goal is purchases and sign-ups. Build audiences at each stage and create specific campaigns for each.
